America is at a crossroads right now. In one direction is the misguided thought of the past; in the other, the light of emerging ideology shines brighter then ever. What am I talking about? What ideology, issue is at a crossroads in America? The answer is LGBT rights.
LGBT rights have been at the forefront of political debate in the last decade or so. There have been laws changed to give LGBT people the right to have a civil union, domestic partnership, or like in my great home state, Iowa, the right to get married.
The misguided thought of the past is that gay marriage or giving rights to LGBT people is morally wrong. It’s against my beliefs. My religion says that gay people are an abomination. Gay marriage will destroy traditional marriage. Those are just some of the common answers people give against gay marriage and LGBT rights.
Why is this the misguided thought of the past? It is simple. People should be allowed to marry and love whomever they want. It does not hurt me if Steve and Todd or Mary and Alice get married. Who am I to judge? With the divorce rate among heterosexual couples as high as it is, what is wrong with two people of the same sex who love each other deeply getting married? The answer is nothing. Gay marriage should be allowed everywhere in the US.
The rights of LGBT people need to be protected; simple as that. Someone shouldn’t have to worry about being fired or being bullied because they are gay. Thankfully many states have included sexual orientation as a reason a person cannot fire you.
This is the light shining that is people should be free to love whomever they want and shouldn’t be persecuted, bullied, harassed, teased or fired for who they are. The light is shining in Iowa, Vermont, New York and across the country.
Change is coming. The tide is turning. The old misguided thoughts that gay marriage and LGBT rights are wrong are over. It may have taken a long time (too long, in my opinion) but it is happening. Look what’s happening in California right now. California schools are required to add accomplishments of LGBT Americans in the social studies curriculum.
The crossroads America is at right now is slowly changing into a one-lane road with a few stragglers struggling to keep up. Yes, there are still people who are going to think gay marriage should never be allowed. Yes, there are still people who harass LGBT people. But, it is getting better. As time passes, gay marriage and LGBT rights will be common throughout the country, and as more Americans have equal rights under the law, America prospers more.
